Forex trading costs explained: spreads, commission and overnight financing

Compare the actual cost of placing and holding a forex trade rather than choosing an account by its headline spread alone.

A low spread does not always mean a low total cost

The spread is the difference between the bid and ask quotation. Some accounts advertise tighter spreads but add a separate commission; others bundle more of the cost into the spread. Any comparison needs the same instrument, trade size and trading hours before the figures are meaningfully comparable.

Use one consistent cost calculation

Estimate the spread in pips multiplied by the monetary value of a pip at your chosen position size. Add the full round-trip commission if applicable, and account for the difference between quoted and actual execution. Currency conversion can matter if the trading account is denominated differently from the instrument.

  • Spread cost at the chosen position size
  • Opening and closing commissions
  • Potential slippage and account currency conversion
  • Any applicable financing if the position is held beyond the relevant cutoff

Overnight financing can change the result

Holding a leveraged position overnight may lead to financing or swap charges, credits or administrative fees. The treatment varies by provider, account type, product and day. Read the provider’s schedule rather than treating an account’s spread as its entire cost.

  • Confirm whether the product is spot forex, a CFD or another instrument.
  • Review the official rollover policy.
  • Check the account’s legal entity, jurisdiction and trading permissions.

Compare the workflow as well as the price

Platform support, order types, execution policies and regulatory protections matter alongside trading cost. TradeOffr lists verified provider facts, but the broker’s final terms govern the service.

Use this guide as a framework for research. Provider-specific facts shown in TradeOffr comparisons are published through the official-source verification gate; unresolved changes stay out of the public comparison.
